The Pantheon

File:Pantheon-panini.jpg

A remarkable painting of a marvelous building. Giovanni Paolo Panini created this beautiful image in the first half of the 18th century; the Pantheon, however, dates quite a bit further back: the original Pantheon was dedicated in 27 BC. Destroyed by a major fire in AD 80, Domitian rebuilt it; this second building was also destroyed by fire (in AD 110). Finally, Trajan (r. AD 96-117) built a third Pantheon, the structure that is still standing in Rome today, nearly 2,000 years later. And if that were not impressive enough, there is the great beauty of the building to consider and the fact that the Pantheon’s dome remains the largest ever built of unreinforced concrete. Wow!
